New College Scholarship Established to Honor Longtime MRH Educator
Anne Heiman impacted generations of MRH students during her more than 50 years of teaching in the MRH School District, and now she will continue to make a difference for students who are continuing their education beyond MRH.
A new college scholarship has been established thanks to a generous bequest from Mrs. Heiman’s estate. The scholarship will be awarded to one MRH High senior each year. Helping the students of MRH was an important part of Mrs. Heiman’s life, and now that legacy will live on.
Mrs. Heiman began teaching in MRH in the mid-1920s and continued in the district until the mid-1970s. She began her MRH career teaching at West Richmond School and later taught at Chaney School, teaching kindergarten the entire time. Prior to coming to MRH, Mrs. Heiman taught kindergarten for one year in her hometown of Cardwell, Mo. She received her teaching certificate from Missouri Teachers’ College, now Southeast Missouri State University.
Hundreds of students certainly remember Mrs. Heiman and she was always recognized in and around the community. She remembered all of her students and would say, “Now, don’t tell me your name. Give me time and I’ll remember it.” She was delighted later in her career when she began teaching the children of her former kindergarten students.
After her retirement Mrs. Heiman continued to help people. She crocheted 100 caps each year into her late 90s to be given to the poor. She made baby clothes and receiving blankets to be given to charity as well.
The first recipient of the Anne Heiman scholarship will be chosen later this year. More information on that recipient and the legacy that Mrs. Heiman has left behind will be included in future MRH publications.
