Searching for Library Materials

Alexandria is the computer system we use to keep track of everything we have in the MRH school library. Any computer workstation in the library is hooked up to the Alexandria Researcher. You can look up books or videos by title, author, or subject matter. If you have a laptop and you are on school property, you can go to:

http://10.1.0.25 (notice there is no www. in front of the address)

and you will be connected to Alexandria. If you are anywhere else besides an MRH school building, this will not work.

Searching in Databases

SIRS Discoverer and SIRS Researcher are online research databases that search books, journals, magazines, newspapers, reference books, maps, graphics, images and more. Editors carefully select only the most accurate, most relevant material. Our school pays a yearly fee so that you can have access to this database. Use it often! SIRS Discoverer is more oriented toward middle school students, and SIRS Researcher is more oriented toward high school students.
  1. Go to proquestk12.com
  2. In the green box that says Product Login, enter MO1025H as your user name.
  3. Then, enter 63143 as your password.
  4. Click on the orange bar that says SIRS products.
  5. Choose SIRS Knowledge Source if you want SIRS Researcher (for high school), or choose SIRS Discoverer (for middle school).
EBSCOhost is an online research database that searches books, magazines, newspapers, reference books, biographies, radio and TV transcripts, photos, maps, and more. Once again, editors have sifted through the materials for the best, most educationally appropriate information.
  1. Go to more.net
  2. Click on Online Resources at the top of the screen.
  3. Click on EBSCOhost.
  4. Click on the database that best suits your needs. They are organized with the most sophisticated at the top and the simplest at the bottom.

Searching on the World Wide Web

Net Trekker is a web search engine that only includes websites that have been reviewed by teachers. This is a service the school subscribes to, so please use it frequently.
  1. Go to nettrekker.com
  2. Click on the light blue Classic button.
  3. Log in using mrhstudent as your username.
  4. Enter mrhsd as your password.
Google is an incredibly popular search engine. Be savvy on how to use Google – go to googleguide.com for a complete list of all the options Google offers that you may not know about. Remember that Google is a search engine, not a subject directory, so the sites you pull up are the most popular, not the most relevant. Remember that Google can only search the surface web, which is only 8-10% of the entire internet.

There are meta-search engines – search engines that search multiple search engines simultaneously so that you get better results. Some examples include:
Subject directories are sites that lead to websites that have been previewed for content. In a subject directory, you don't just get the most popular results, you get results that are (usually) more relevant to your search. Examples:
Searching for Video

  2. Use Passcode: BF16-2D09.
  3. Fill out personal information on this screen.
  4. Set user name (your login) and use MRHSD as password.
