| Elementary school students learn reading, mathematics, science, language arts, social studies, writing, and spelling. MRH employs Reading Specialists at every school. Reading Specialists schedule individual sessions or small group lessons with students who need additional attention. Elementary students also attend classes in art, music, library skills, health and physical education. Each elementary class also has a weekly lesson taught by the school guidance counselor covering topics such as drugs and alcohol, peer pressure, or study habits. The main focus for curriculum and instruction at the elementary level is literacy. All professional development time for elementary staff during the 2000-2001 school year was devoted to learning the necessary knowledge and skills for effective literacy teaching. During the summer of 2001, the Elementary Literacy Curriculum Writing Team met for one week and developed a Curriculum Framework Document building on the work of the Literacy Initiative Team and the professional development opportunities that influenced the work.
