Summer of Paddling

Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary - photo by Jamie Kelley 8th grade teacher

The class of 2017 began their last year of Middle School with an expedition to the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary to join in on the Summer of Paddling on August 17. Once there, students were able to participate in guided paddle tours with Big Muddy Adventures, helping the students to hone their paddle skills and to continue to develop their sense of adventure. Fredbird also just happened to be along for the ride.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department also led the students in identifying live fish of the Mississippi River, deepening our students' understanding of the ecology of the river and surrounding wetlands. Students were also able to paddle and experience historically accurate canoes and a replica of Lewis and Clark's keel boat, which allowed our students to experience the living history that is all around us in Missouri.

A new path in the bird sanctuary was also developed with the help of our students, in conjunction with a local chapter of the Sierra Club.  We appreciated the students service to our greater community as they gathered driftwood and trash to make this new path more accessible.  We thank all of our parents for their quick turn around with the permission slips and the permission they give their children to explore and engage in wonderful learning opportunities both near and far.
